About

In 2006, the Launceston City Council facilitated the ‘Its About Us’ program. This series of events focused community attention to the wishes and hopes of Launceston people as they reflected on 200 years of European settlement in Launceston, and a much longer history of indigenous involvement in the area.

The Tree of Hope project formed part of the Its About Us program and aimed to give children and young people the opportunity to express their hopes for the future. The Tree of Hope project replicates an earlier project undertaken by the Launceston City Council in conjunction with the Playgroup Association of Tasmania in 1992.

Approximately 1070 students from 45 classes in 15 schools in the Launceston area participated in the 2006 project.  Researchers worked with students from grades 1 to 6.  Class discussions explored ideas of hope and the future.  Students discussed the extent to which their hopes and wishes represent personal, local, national or global wishes (or a combination of these).

Students then individually wrote about their hope for the future and decorated their leaf.
